SOLITUDE AND ABSOLUTE FORM
JULY – SEPTEMBER, 2011

Sunset Steens Mountain

Painted Hills Abstract
It is in the solitude of open spaces that I find my essence, my self. In the stalwart company of my dogs, time in nature passes in a way unfamiliar to my day to day experience: clouds lose their inhibitions to the wind and slip East over a mountain top, the changing weather and the moving sun mark the passage of the day.The history and geological wonder of the Painted Hills plays in my mind as the miles of empty road pass by. I gaze on Smith Rock, stop to look at the details, take in the grand landscape to find understanding in the small pieces that make it a whole, the pieces that make it a form. The call of the desert draws me back season after season to Oregon, to California, and onward to Nevada. It is the satiation of a desire to collect and reconnect with pieces of my soul. It is solitude in its most absolute form.
My fascination with photography began at a young age. I remember the day
I received my first roll of 110 film as though it were a photo framed in my mind. From the Kodak yellow foil wrapper to the tiny black plastic cartridge to the excitement of picking up the prints at the drug store and feeling a special delight knowing and still disbelieving that I took these pictures; every part of the experience fascinated me. I now use a wide variety of equipment and techniques to make my images and translate them to paper. But even as technology changes, my fascination with the click of the shutter continues.
My career as a photographer began nearly a decade ago. Specializing in commercial and editorial photography, I have had the opportunity to record a wide variety of people and objects with my camera. This diversity keeps my career active and exciting. I strive to see everyday objects in a new light and with a fresh perspective. From fellow artists, corpora- tions, magazines and non-profits, each project brings challenges and opportunities to tell a story or convey ideas in new ways. But, it is in the serenity of natural landscapes where my passion for photography and the outdoors are wed to capture images, pieces of time that reignite my life and my work.
